As we consider energy sustainability and the electrification of many industries (i.e. transportation, chemical industry, etc.), there is more and more need for a generation of energy storage technology beyond lithium-ion batteries. This micro grand challenge will focus on an energy storage solution with either the use of more earth-abundant materials and/or better recyclability/biodegradability.

Current S&T undergraduate students are invited to compete in the Micro Grand Challenge with Dr. Shelly Minteer on Sunday, April 21st from 2pm-5pm. Dr. Minteer is the director of the Kummer Institute Center for Resource Sustainability on campus. This event is modeled after the international Grand Challenges event https://engineeringchallenges.org/14500.aspx. For the S&T event this spring, Dr. Minteer will be giving students a briefing of the challenges with the area of energy storage solutions. Students will then be broken up into teams and given 60 minutes to work on digging into the problem and identifying the specific area of research they think is critical to finding solutions for this issue. Teams will present their findings beginning at 3:45pm. The winning team of students will be able to actualize their research with Dr. Minteer in the fall 2024, receiving research scholarships through the OURE program.
